The alerted emergency services had difficulty getting to the victim because of the aggressive animal and were forced to shoot the animal to give the man first aid. Attempts to save the man came too late, he died on the spot.
Although it is banned in Australia, police suspect the man kept the wild animal as a pet. According to Australian media there hasn’t been a kangaroo killing anyone since 1936.
At the time, 38-year-old William Cruickshank died in a hospital in Hillston, New South Wales, months after being attacked by a kangaroo. Cruickshank had suffered serious head injuries, including a broken jaw, when he tried to save his two dogs from the paws of a large kangaroo, The Sydney Morning Herald newspaper reported at the time.
