Dead and injured: tragedy at the master celebration in Algeria

The MC Algier would have had every reason to celebrate after winning the championship. Then there was a terrible incident.

A serious misfortune overshadowed the championship celebration of the Algerian football club Mouloudia Club d’Alger (MC Algier) on Saturday. The club had already stood out as the title holder before 0-0 against the Nedjm Chabab Maga. It was the ninth championship in history. But the award ceremony was immediately canceled in 1962 after an incident in the spectators in Stade 5 Juillet.

As reported, among other things, several French -speaking media, a balustrade collapsed in the upper rank of the south curve under the weight of the bouncing fans. The result: Numerous supporters plunged down from the second floor.

According to the French sports newspaper “L’équipe”, which refers to information from the Algerian Ministry of Health, three people were killed, 80 others were injured and hospitalized.

At first, only one dead person had been reported. Algeria’s President Abdelmadjid Tebboune had already conducted and wrote in the evening: “After the terrible accident, which today hit the fans of Mouloudia Club d’Alger in Stade 5 Juillet, I can only pray for the deceased fan, if God may be gracious to him and grant him a place in paradise.” The family, friends and the employees of Mouloudia Club d’Alger speak his condolences and pray “for recovery of the injured and their soon return to their families,” continued Tebboune.
