September 13
– Bologna

The Unipol Arena is ready to host the first of the Davis Cup matches that will animate the week from today. At 3 pm, live on Supertennis, Supertennix and Sky, Argentina-Sweden will be played from which you will already have the first indications on the balance of the group in which Italy is inserted. The group led by Coria can count on three players among the top 40 in the world in singles: Diego Schwartzman (# 16 in the world), Francisco Cerúndolo (27) and Sebastián Báez (37), but also the doubles are experienced and insidious. The Argentine duo will be formed by Horacio Zeballos (9 in the specialty ranking) and Máximo González (49). Less experienced Sweden, which in its history of Davis has conquered seven and who presents with the brothers Mikael Ymer and Elias Ymer, Jonathan Mridha, Karl Friberg and Andre Goransso. Italy will enter the field tomorrow, again at 15 against Croatia who eliminated us from the final phase last year in Turin. But this year Volandri’s group is complete, and the Croats are orphans of Marin Cilic even though now they can also count on a Borna Coric in full recovery.

The other groups and the formula

The other three groups of four teams will be played in Hamburg (France, Germany, Belgium, Australia), Glasgow (USA, Great Britain, Kazakhstan, Holland) and Valencia (Spain, Canada, Serbia, South Korea). The regulation foresees for each match between nations the dispute of two singles and a double, all at the best of two sets out of three. In the singles, the two numbers 1 and the two numbers 2 selected by the captains for each challenge will compete. The group ranking is based primarily on the number of victories in the “ties”, the challenges between nations. If two teams complete the group with equal wins, the order will be determined by the head to head matches. If three nations arrive with equal wins, they will be considered in order: the percentage of individual matches won, the set quotient and the game quotient.
