Rick Dalton and Cliff Booth could soon celebrate a comeback – but under a new direction.

The figures from Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon A Time in Hollywood” may be about to return to the screen. However, with a surprising turn: Tarantino itself will direct, but David Fincher. The project is located at Netflix and, according to insider sources, is already in an advanced planning phase. A shooting start in late summer does not seem to be excluded.

Both Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio are in conversations to slip into their celebrated roles again. Pitt as Stuntman Cliff Booth, DiCaprio as a removed TV star Rick Dalton. While Tarantino wrote the script itself, he waives the directing position this time. Instead, a director competes with Fincher with whom Pitt combines a long creative story. Together they realized films such as “Sieben”, “Fight Club” and “The strange case of Benjamin Button”. The two of them also had a continuation of “World War W was Z”.

Fincher has a contract with Netflix

Tarantino originally planned another project: “The Movie Critic”. This film, which was supposed to play in the 1970s and was to make a film critic for a dirty magazine, was long considered his final work. But apparently Tarantino put the project on ice for unknown reasons. Although here Pitt was again intended as a booth.

Pitt was apparently so impressed by the new script that he asked Tarantino if he would hand over the director to someone else. Tarantino’s answer was analogous: “It depends on whom.” When Pitt returned with Fincher as a suggestion, the Tarantino gave his blessing. The project was then restructured and finally found a home at Netflix, where Fincher has an exclusive contract anyway.

Sony continues to keep the rights to the original film

Interestingly, according to industry experts, it is not an officially a continuation of “Once Upon A Time in Hollywood”. From a legal point of view, the new film is a so -called derivative. So a work based on existing characters, but is not a direct continuation of the story. Tarantino has the rights to the characters, while Sony continues to keep the rights to the original film. This contractual construction explains why the new film has to work independently. Even if familiar faces appear.

It is currently uncertain whether Leonardo DiCaprio will actually be part of the party. The actor is currently in discussions about several projects, including an Evel knee biopic at Paramount, which is to be shot in summer, as well as another project with Martin Scorsese. So far it is not known how big its possible role in the new film is.

One thing is clear: this story is not an April Fool’s joke, even if it became public on April 1. “The tension is increasing”: Tarantino fans and cineastes worldwide can look forward to an extraordinary film event that combines classic Hollywood nostalgia with the dark style of David Finchers.
