Even the seventh participation doesn’t go past the third round: Martin Schindler failed at the Darts World Cup because of himself and the outstanding Ryan Searle. After a game with many mistakes from the German, there was a lightning-quick 4-0 defeat.
After convincing performances so far, Schindler went into the game as the slight favorite. He had won the last two duels (the last in September 2024 in the final of the Swiss Darts Trophy) against Searle and was number eight in the tournament with a three-dart average of 97.54 points. But the dream of reaching the World Cup round of 16 for the first time shattered after just 23:52 minutes.
“Ryan walked over to me“said Schindler after the game on “Dazn”. “I believed in myself at all times, but Ryan was ruthless.”
Top start for Schindler, then the double crisis
Schindler let it rip right at the beginning of the game, he conjured up a 180 on the first throw. It was his 13th in the tournament, and before the game he was already in the top 10 in this regard. However, things continued nervously, Schindler needed luck and Searle missed six double fields, the German sank his fourth attempt to win the leg.
But things didn’t continue so happily because Schindler made too many mistakes. In the third and fourth legs, the 29-year-old achieved further 180s, but because he made mistakes in both rounds and missed the double field a total of five more times, his opponent took the first set. Searle made it 3-1 after a very disjointed first round with his second set dart.
Schindler manages to break, but he lets Searle come back
It was Schindler’s fault that he missed the lead after hitting just one of nine doubles. Searle also showed weaknesses, with 30 percent the Englishman was well below his previous rate of 54.55 percent, which put him on a par with Luke Littler. Searle wasn’t able to show this class yet and missed a double dart in the first leg, which Schindler was able to use immediately for a break this time.
But the old suffering immediately returned, Schindler missed three opportunities to make it 2-0, allowing Searle to get an immediate rebreak. The 38-year-old confirmed this with a 151 finish, after which he continued with his first 180. Searle was in rhythm and gave his opponent no chance to equalize, winning the second set with his first set dart.
Searle makes it rain double 20s
Schindler also missed two doubles at the start of the third set and was broken again; there were many signs that the World Cup, in which he had never made it past the third round, would not continue to be a good place. Searle hardly missed a chance, especially sinking the double 20 practically every time. Consequently, the third set also ended on this field – because Schindler’s arrow kept “slipping” into the 5.
Searle also closed the first leg in the fourth set with a double 20, and then opened the second leg with a 180. His three-dart average was 102.29 points in the end, his double rate was 48 percent, Schindler had no chance.
It didn’t even take half an hour before Schindler (average of 89 and two out of 15 on doubles) had to pack his bags after winning only two legs with a score of 0:4 in sets. Searle continues on Tuesday in the round of 16 against James Hurrell, who had managed the surprise against Stephen Bunting (4:3) the day before.
