Daphne Deckers goes deep through the dust in her weekly column in the woman because she is responsible for serious water crisis in southern Spain and Portugal. “I won’t do it anymore.”

Until recently, it was such a carefree and soothing moment for Daphne Deckers: the moment in the day in which she punctures her sharp knife in an avocado until she reaches the pit. She then practices on her sandwich, she puts in her salads, a homemade Pokébowl and in healthy wraps. In fact: they are even in her smoothies.

Eye-opener

But what does it turn out now? Daphne causes an incredible amount of damage with this. She is guilty and goes into the Woman Deep through the dust. A lunch with a good friend was an eye-opener for her.

What that girlfriend had to report? “We should not eat avocados at all, because they are very bad for the environment.”

Not fun

For Daphne this was a very annoying start to her girlfriend lunch. “Nobody likes to hear that he is doing badly, let alone with something you really like.”

Most avocados come from Mexico. “As a result of which more and more rainforest is being cut down for more plantations. (…) There is now also avocado cultivation closer, in Portugal and southern Spain, but whole lakes are in danger of disappearing through water use.”

Water crises

And that is partly due to Daphne. “It feels a bit exaggerated to think that water crises are created because I like to eat a sandwich with avocado, but in fact it is of course that way.”

The result? “Wouldn’t it be better to consider them a delicacy instead of a daily thing?”

Also saves in its wallet, Daphne concludes, because: “I think they are pricey nowadays.”
