Hansi Flick’s former assistant at FC Bayern and the German national team, Danny Röhl, could be drawn to the Premier League. The coach of the second division team Sheffield Wednesday is said to be very popular with Southampton FC, who parted ways with promotion hero Russell Martin on Monday. Röhl already worked as Ralph Hasenhüttl’s right-hand man at the Saints between December 2018 and August 2019.
The British daily newspaper “The Times” reports that Southampton is considering making an offer for Röhl. The 35-year-old had extended his contract until 2027 in the spring and would therefore cost a transfer fee. The TV station “Sky” in Germany is talking about discussions between the interested club and the coach, but official negotiations have not yet taken place. Röhl is one of the favorites to succeed Martin, who took over Southampton as a second division team in the 2023/24 season and led them into the first division last summer. In the English upper house, the Saints are in last place in the table after 16 match days and have five points.
Röhl came to Sheffield in October 2023 and moved into the front row for the first time in his career. He finished his debut season in 20th place and is currently ranked ninth after 21 games played – although based on the squad value (31.2 million), Sheffield would be a candidate for relegation. No other team in the league performs better in the Transfermarkt statistics “squad value vs. league rank”.
