Daniil Medvedev quarrels with umpire and is eliminated early from Libéma Open | Tennis

Daniil Medvedev has been eliminated in the second round of the Rosmalen grass tournament. The number 3 in the world, last year’s finalist at the Autotron, lost 4-6 6-4 6-2 to the Frenchman Adrian Mannarino.

The 27-year-old Medvedev quarreled with the umpire in the third set, who gave him a point penalty after a warning. As a result, Mannarino was allowed to start his service game with a 15-0 lead. Medvedev threw his racket hard against the grass after losing his service game and was punished for his misconduct shortly after receiving a warning. At the side change, Medvedev expressed his dissatisfaction with the performance of the referee.

Mannarino was not distracted by the incident and continued to make few mistakes on the center court. After exactly 2 hours, the left-handed Frenchman used his first game point, on the service of the disappointed Medvedev. The number 1 on the seeding list took the trouble to shake hands with the umpire.

The 34-year-old Mannarino won the tournament in Rosmalen four years ago. He then defeated Australian Jordan Thompson in the final.

Medvedev, already winner of five titles this season, was also the best at the ABN AMRO Open in Rotterdam at the beginning of this year. He could have become the first tennis player in 26 years to win both ATP tournaments on Dutch soil in the same year. In 1997, Richard Krajicek succeeded.

Last year Medvedev – this year started with a bye – lost in the final to Tim van Rijthoven, who was injured this year. Earlier in the day, Tallon Greek track managed to win his second round.
