News broke Monday that David Jude Jolicoeur had died. The rapper, who co-founded De La Soul in the 1980s and best known by his stage name Trugoy the Dove, died on February 12, 2023 at the age of 54. reported this various US media, his management confirmed his death to Pitchfork. Accordingly, Jolicoeur had been suffering from heart problems for a long time. An official cause of death was not initially announced.
Among the many expressions of mourning from prominent musicians, Damon Albarn also spoke up. He posted a snippet of an instrumental piano piece on Instagram. The video only shows the stops of the instrument. Underneath, Albarn wrote: “A loop for Dave. Ich liebe dich.”
Albarn and Jolicoeur have been musical companions for years. The rapper was featured on the Gorillaz hit “Feel Good Inc.”, as well as their albums PLASTIC BEACH and HUMANZ.
The late artist was also commemorated on the official Gorillaz Instagram page. The band posted a photo of a performance together with the caption, “Our brother ❤️ we love you.”
Jolicoeur was born on September 21, 1968. He formed De La Soul in Long Island in 1988 with rappers Kelvin Mercer aka Posdnuos and Vincent Mason aka Maseo. Her debut album 3 FEET HIGH AND RISING, released a year later, is considered one of the most influential hip-hop records of her time. Jolicoeur talked about this milestone in an interview with Billboard a while back. He said: “If the album were released today, the hip-hop world wouldn’t get it. It would probably be too soft and obnoxious for a lot of people.” He continued, “Today, hip hop is about what you wear, who you impress, how much money you have, how much you spend, and what’s in the bag that you take with you you carry around What 3 FEET HIGH AND RISING meant back then wouldn’t mean anything now.”
De La Soul released nine studio albums in her career, most recently AND THE ANONYMOUS NOBODY… in 2016. Their legendary early works – in addition to the debut and its successor DE LA SOUL IS DEAD – were not available digitally in the stream for years. That should change at the beginning of March, with her song “Eye Know” recently starting.
The Gorillaz’ new album is called CRACKER ISLAND and is scheduled for release on February 24, 2023.
