The supermarkets have already suffered “tens of millions” in damage due to blockade of distribution centers by farmers. It is about turnover that the stores miss out on because of deliveries that cannot take place or products that spoil, a spokesperson for the trade association CBL told NU.nl.

The CBL cannot give an exact number of lost turnover, “but that continues to increase the longer the distribution centers are occupied”. On Monday, the CBL was still talking about millions of euros, now it would already be about tens of millions. The supermarket chain Coop announced earlier in the day that it expects several million euros in damage.

Empty shelves can now be found in many stores. Fresh products such as dairy, meat, fruit and eggs are still difficult to obtain. This is on the one hand because the blockages make it impossible to replenish the products and on the other hand because the products that are still available corrupt and therefore have to be thrown away.

On Monday, the CBL already warned that this blockade could also affect the shopping in the longer term if deliveries had to be stopped completely. The delivery service Picnic and flash deliverers such as Gorillas are also affected by the farmers’ protests.
