Status: 09/26/2022 12:17 p.m

After his argument with two teenagers, cycling star Mathieu van der Poel has been fined.

The 27-year-old has to pay around 1,000 euros because he is said to have pushed a 13-year-old and a 14-year-old girl the night before the world championship race in Wollongong, Australia. This is reported by the Dutch newspaper “De Telegraaf”.

The two teenagers had repeatedly knocked on the Dutchman’s door, disturbing his sleep before the race. The case was supposed to be heard on Tuesday, but was brought forward at the request of the defense attorney.

The judge ruled that van der Poel had taken the law into his own hands. It was advisable to call the hotel’s security service. The defense attorney immediately appealed against the fine. Regardless of this, Van der Poel can start the journey home.

Van der Poel gives up World Championship races

After the altercation, van der Poel was taken into police custody and spent most of the night before the World Championship race at the police station. The co-favorite still started, but got off his bike after an hour.

According to a report by “Sporza”, not only did van der Poel’s image suffer from the incident, but also that of the hotel. The online rating is said to have dropped drastically because fans of the wheel star are said to have left more negative comments and ratings.
