Cycling, Germany Tour: Gregor Mühlberger wins the queen stage

Status: 08/25/2023 5:19 p.m

What a coup by Gregor Mühlberger: The Austrian from Team Movistar made the decisive attack on Friday (25.08.2023) shortly before the end of the rainy queen stage of the Deutschland Tour to win the day.

On the last 500 meters of the 201.3 kilometers from Kassel to Winterberg in Hochsauerland, the main field, which has meanwhile been greatly reduced, rushed in. Mühlberger kept looking around a bit anxiously – but in the end his lead was big enough to save the completely surprising triumph over the finish line.

Politt in seventh place best German

Bora-hansgrohe professional Nils Politt came in seventh as the best German and said shortly after the race on ZDF: “The finish was extremely hard, the last few kilometers were amazing. The rain didn’t play into our hands.”

At the finish he was ten seconds behind Mühlberger, who drove for Bora until 2020. Georg Zimmermann (Intermarche-Circus-Wanty) from the Allgäu also impressed with eighth place.

Wilder still in the lead

The Belgian Ilan Van Wilder (Soudal-Quick Step), winner of the first stage on Thursday, continues to lead the overall standings with an eleven-second lead over the Austrian Felix Großschartner (UAE Team Emirates).

Third is Pavel Sivakov (France/Ineos Grenadiers), 13 seconds back. Politt is seventh, 22 seconds back, but the last two stages are not too difficult.

Saturday from Arnsberg to Essen

On Saturday (08/26/2023, from 3.30 p.m. live on the ARD in the live stream at sportschau.de) the third stage from Arnsberg to Essen is on the program.

Over 173.8 kilometers there are still some tough climbs, here the preliminary decision about the overall victory could be made.
