China has rejected a representation of US President Donald Trump, according to which both sides were in direct contact in the trade dispute.
“As far as I know, there were no consultations or negotiations between China and the United States in the customs question – let alone an agreement,” said a spokesman for the Beijing Ministry of Foreign Affairs when asked by a journalist. Corresponding reports are “fake news”, the spokesman continued.
The customs war was initiated by the United States. China’s attitude is clear: you will fight until the end. The door is open, but negotiations should be at eye level, respectful and advantageous for both sides.
Trump speaks of daily contact
Trump had previously said that the United States and China were in daily contact. When asked by a journalist whether there was any direct contact with China in the trade conflict, Trump replied: “Yes, of course. And every day, every day.”
Trump had escalated the trade conflict in early April by raising special tariffs against numerous countries. Later he ordered a 90-day break of the serves. Special tariffs of up to 145 percent still apply only on products from China. In return, Beijing raised tariffs of 125 percent on goods from the United States.
