Curling women miss EM semifinals

The German curling women didn’t use their good chances to reach the semi-finals at the European Championships in Östersund, Sweden and narrowly failed.

On Wednesday, the team of the German Curling Association (DCV) with Skip Daniela Jentsch (Füssen) first beat Switzerland 10:7, but then lost clearly in the final group game against Denmark with 3:12 and slipped down to seventh place.

With a record of 5:3 victories, the DCV team was still tied for third place before the last preliminary round match, together with Turkey and Italy. Ultimately, alongside Italy, Scotland surprisingly secured the last place in the semifinals. Switzerland and Denmark were already safely qualified.

The men had previously also been eliminated. The team around Skip Sixten Totzek (Rastatt) still had a small chance of reaching the semifinals, but lost 4:8 against the Czech Republic. Because of the triumph of hosts Sweden against Turkey, even a win would not have been enough.

The final group game on Thursday against Switzerland is therefore sportingly meaningless, the Swiss are already through. Italy, Scotland and hosts Sweden are also confirmed as semi-finalists.
