The THW Kiel must cope with a bitter setback in its personnel planning. Gonzalo Pérez de Vargas, who was to form the goalkeeper duo with Andreas Wolff from summer, was seriously injured.
As FC Barcelona announced via Instagram, the Spanish national goalkeeper suffered a cruciate ligament tear in the left knee. The 34-year-old contracted the injury on Saturday evening in the game against Bidasoa Irun. The goalkeeper will be operated on in the coming days.
THW Managing Director Viktor Szilagyi commented on the situation on Sunday at the Dyn streaming service. The news was a shock, he said on the sidelines of the Kieler 25:27 defeat against HSG Wetzlar.
So far, Kiel has only been at a goalkeeper with DHB star Andreas Wolff for the 2025/26 season. Samir Bellahcene switched to TVB Stuttgart during the current season, and Tomas Mrkva joins SC DHfK Leipzig after the season.
