Very busy at fireworks shops in Brabant, where enthusiasts can go again from Saturday for their share of decorative cakes, compound boxes and ground flowers. Some enthusiasts spend a lot of money and buy hundreds, or sometimes even several thousand euros. “My family comes to us especially for this.”
“Decorative fireworks, pop packages for the young people and very nice compounds. It’s all sold,” says fireworks seller Marta from De Loods Vuurwerk in Vught. According to her, people spend an average of one hundred to one hundred and fifty euros per person. “You can get something nice for that amount,” she assures.
In principle, in the Netherlands, fireworks may only be sold on the last three days of the year. This year the sale starts a day earlier, because fireworks are not allowed on Sundays.
Accidents
Yet the explosions have been going on for some time. Illegal fireworks, according to Marta. “It’s annoying, because illegal fireworks cause accidents. While we even provide extensive lighting instructions when they are sold and we also advise people not to drink alcohol when lighting them. And if something happens to the illegal fireworks, we as a fireworks store are wrongly blamed for this. looked at.”
There is a fireworks ban in several cities this year, but in Vught people are still allowed to ring in the new year with a bang. “Hopefully we will continue this tradition for years to come.”
Fireworks ban in Tilburg
This is different in Tilburg. Fireworks may be sold there, but not set off. Yet a Tilburg citizen shoves boxes full into his trunk. “For a thousand euros. On New Year’s Eve we are civil disobedient,” he says. “My family comes especially for the fireworks. The ban was not enforced last year either. I wouldn’t know how the police should do that either.”
Another man has just bought three large boxes for seven hundred euros. He can legally light it, because he lives in Gorinchem. “We have been coming here for five years. The fireworks here are nicer than ours and cheaper, it easily saves two hundred euros.”
