Crooked fence is a thorn in Alkmaar’s side, but will disappear ‘soon’

A much-discussed crooked fence in the Alkmaar district of Overstad will disappear ‘soon’. At least that is the expectation of the municipality. The owner of the piece of land is said to be planning to install a new fence. Local residents have thought the rickety wall dangerous for years.

A few words are enough for many Alkmaarders: “That crooked fence in Overstad.” Then it is already clear to many that it concerns the partly subsided wall on the Koedijkerstraat. It has been in bad shape for years.

For local residents, the fence is a permanent point of concern, they say to media partner Alkmaar Central. Certainly residents of the new building on Truus Wijsmuller-Meijerstraat.

Dangerous

“I have pointed this out to the municipality several times,” says Arianne Mantel. “Our children play there. It is dangerous and it is getting worse. As a pedestrian you hardly dare to pass.”

Mantel also complained on Twitter. “But I’ve done that before, and nothing has changed at all,” she says concerned. But now things seem to be moving forward.

In response to questions from Alkmaar Central the municipality explains that the initiative lies with the owner of the fence. “We are in discussion with that,” says the municipality. “He has indicated that he will remove the fence in the short term and replace it with an alternative.”

When asked whether the municipality is also taking enforcement action, she reiterates that talks are being held with the owner of the plot.
