FC Bayern honorary president Uli Hoeneß criticizes former CEO Oliver Kahn. He described the decision to fire Julian Nagelsmann in the BR as “not wise”.

Uli Hoeneß regretted the appointment of Oliver Kahn as CEO of FC Bayern on Bayerischer Rundfunk: “The appointment of Kahn was a big mistake,” he said on the “Sonntags-Stammtisch” program. “The most important thing is to start with yourself and admit that you have made mistakes.” The Kahn personnel was such a mistake. But when he realized “that he couldn’t do that, I changed that together with Karl-Heinz Rummenigge,” said the 71-year-old.

criticism of Work attitude by Oliver Kahn

The honorary president of FC Bayern repeated his criticism of Kahn’s work approach, which was in the was fired last season shortly before the decisive game for the German championship: “If someone plays football at Bayern Munich for ten years today, he never needs to work at all anymore. Whether a player is prepared to work 12 hours a day, six days a week when he no longer needs it, that is the big question. Oliver Kahn recently said in an interview: ‘A CEO doesn’t have to work 24 hours a day.’ To which I replied: ‘But there should be twelve.'”

For this reason, he would continue to move away from his credo that a former FC Bayern player must always be involved in the management team: “I would no longer see it that way today, because the difference between what we – Sepp Maier, “Franz Beckenbauer, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge or I – we used to earn and today it’s too big. We used to earn well as football players, but we were clear that we still had to work to maintain our family’s prosperity.”

Hoeneß avoids making a statement about Max Eberl

Regarding the possible employment of official Max Eberl, who was recently fired from Rasenballsport Leipzig and for whom there has been speculation about possible interest from FC Bayern for years, Hoeneß answered evasively: “I estimate that we will have the next six to twelve months have the right personnel to make the future.” Then, according to Hoeneß, he and Rummenigge will be more active in an advisory capacity again. “At the moment we also have an operational task, which will be the case until the ship is sailing straight again.”

Nagelsmann dismissal “not necessarily wise”

Hoeneß also described the dismissal of Julian Nagelsmann as coach of FC Bayern Munich in March 2023 as “not necessarily wise”. Nagelsmann is the new national coach and will initially train the DFB team including the home European Championships in 2024. Hoeneß believes he can take on this role: “He’s completely fresh and has recovered well. He’ll move forward at full speed,” said the 71-year-old, who later indicated that he could easily imagine Jürgen Klopp taking over the position national coach should carry out in the future.

Hoeneß: Harry Kane “only” cost 95 million

Hoeneß also provided insights into the transfer fee for Harry Kane. According to the honorary president, the transfer fee for the English center forward – contrary to what was previously assumed – was said to be under 100 million euros. “We only spent 95 million,” said Hoeneß. It was also noticeable that Hoeneß only criticized Kahn during his appearance. During his appearance, he avoided criticizing Hasan Salihamidžić, who was fired along with Kahn and was considered a protégé of Hoeneß.
