Manchester United celebrated an important win against Tottenham Hotspur thanks to an outstanding performance from superstar Cristiano Ronaldo. The superstar scored three times – and made history.
Record-breaker Cristiano Ronaldo has written another piece of football history and is now the leading goalscorer in official matches. The Portuguese scored a hat-trick in Manchester United’s 3-2 (2-1) win over Tottenham Hotspur, scoring 805 to 807 goals. He surpassed the old record of Czechoslovakian Josef Bican, who scored 805 goals.
“It was a fantastic performance, definitely the best since I’ve been the coach here,” said German team manager Ralf Rangnick. “It wasn’t just the three goals, he also worked a lot for the team.”
Man United on Champions League course
After Ronaldo’s hat-trick (12th, 38th, 81st), Manchester is fourth in the table and on course for the Champions League. The Spurs, for whom goals from Harry Kane (35th, penalty kick) and Harry Maguire (72nd, own goal) were not enough, are seventh and five points behind the record champions.
Previously, Jürgen Klopp and Liverpool FC had achieved another important success in the Premier League title race. The team of the German team manager won 2-0 (1-0) at Brighton & Hove Albion and, as second in the table, is still only three points behind leaders and champions Manchester City. It was Liverpool’s eighth league win in a row.
“We’re ready, we don’t have to talk about a title race, we just want to win our games,” said Klopp. “Actually, you always expect Manchester City to win games when you watch them.”
Four days earlier, the Reds had lost to Inter Milan in the Champions League round of 16 second leg (0-1), but still reached the quarter-finals. On Saturday, Luis Diaz (19th) took the lead after strong preparatory work by former Schalke player Joel Matip, star attacker Mohamed Salah (61st) increased with a hand penalty.
