A striking moment on Saturday during Portugal’s European Championship qualifier against Bosnia-Herzegovina. The 38-year-old attacker was accosted by a field attacker in the second half and then even lifted a bit into the air. Portugal’s all-time top scorer could laugh at it, although the young fan was of course quickly taken away by security guards who rushed to the spot.
Ronaldo no longer scored, but Champions League winner Bernardo Silva, who, like Manchester City defender Ruben Dias, started in the base, did. He took care of the 1-0 with a nice chip. After the break, Bruno Fernandes doubled the lead with a header, after which the same Fernandes also made it 3-0 in injury time.
Thanks to the victory, Portugal has the full spoils after three games and is on course for qualification for the European Championship. The team of national coach Roberto Martinez has two points more than Slovakia. The top two countries qualify directly for the final round.
Belgium spills points at home
Belgium dropped points in the European Championship qualifying series. The Red Devils did not get further than 1-1 against Austria in their own King Baudouin Stadium. Portugal did take three points against Bosnia and did good business in the battle for a European Championship ticket. Earlier in the day, Erling Haaland suffered an embarrassing defeat against Scotland with Norway.
Belgium won its first two games under new national coach Domenico Tedesco, but struggled against Austria. The Belgians fell behind in the first half and only recovered after more than an hour of play. In the 62nd minute, Romelu Lukaku, who missed a huge chance in the final of the Champions League last week, scored the equalizer with a shot from the edge of the penalty area.
Belgium had many chances for more, just like Austria on the other side, but no more goals were scored. As a result, the Belgians are on four points after two games, while Austria has collected seven points from three games. For Belgium, PSV attacker Johan Bakayoko participated for 21 minutes as a substitute. Jan Vertonghen, Kevin De Bruyne, Amadou Onana and Leandro Trossard were missing.
Cerny continues in super form
Vaclav Cerny continued his super form from FC Twente with the national team of the Czech Republic. Thanks to two goals from the 23-year-old attacker, coveted by VfL Wolfsburg, the Czech Republic won 0-3 against the Faroe Islands, with which the Czechs did good business in the European Championship qualifying series.
European Championship far away for Haaland and Norway
Norway suffered a painful defeat against Scotland in the fight for a European Championship ticket. Thanks to a goal from Manchester City striker Erling Haaland (a converted penalty kick), the Norwegians were heading for their first victory in the European Championship qualifying series. But in the final phase, the game completely turned around. Lyndon Dykes slid in the equalizer for Scotland in the 87th minute, after which Kenny McLean scored the equalizer two minutes later after a nice attack.
Just before the double hit, Haaland had already been substituted, so he was missing in the Norwegian final offensive that followed. Scotland won the victory and did good business in the battle for a European Championship ticket. The Scots still have the full spoils after three games, while Norway only has one point after three games. Competitor Spain is three points and played one game less.
