A few days after the 4-0 defeat at SC Freiburg, the bottom of the Bundesliga table, 1. FSV Mainz 05, reacted and parted ways with coach Bo Henriksen.
The 0:4 at SC Freiburg (Sunday, November 30th) was Bo Henriksen’s last game as coach of 1. FSV Mainz 05. After the desolate performance in the away game at the sports club The Rheinhessen separated from the Danish coach on Wednesday (December 3rd). U23 coach Benjamin Hoffmann will take over training until the position is filled.
“Mainz 05 owes a lot to Bo Henriksen. He shook up the club and the entire city in an almost hopeless situation and, with his empathetic, passionate nature, helped us stay in the league and even up to a year later to the Conference League Sports director Christian Heidel is quoted in a statement. “Unfortunately, there are always developments in football that make a reorientation necessary for sporting reasons – even though everyone involved worked with all their might to find solutions until the end.”
Heidel: Separation from Henriksen hurts
Together with Henriksen, those responsible came to the realization that the step could no longer be avoided, said Heidel: “Even if the separation really hurts. Bo is a great trainer and a great person.”
Henriksen also regrets the end of his term at Rheinhessen – but has fond memories of the club. “Mainz 05 is a great club with lots of great people and great fans. We have achieved a lot together, I am totally grateful for the many experiences and the time we spent together. Thank you for the great support,” said the Dane. “Unfortunately, this season we didn’t manage to play the same successful football, even though we fought for it until the end. Unfortunately, that’s football too.”
Henriksen took over the 05er team in February 2024 and led Mainz to stay in the league from a seemingly hopeless situation. Last season, the Dane and his team improved and qualified for the European Cup. In the meantime, Henriksen had by far the best points average of all 05 coaches.
