Course builders play an essential role at Jumping Amsterdam

Jumping Amsterdam attracted around 60,000 visitors this weekend. All horse lovers who especially enjoyed what happened on the main track. And what that main track looks like is in the hands of Quintin Maertens. For the third time he is the ultimately responsible course designer for this competition. “That’s a great honor.”

“It really has to be done quickly,” says Quintin Maertens. Weeks before the event, the course designer has already determined what the obstacles look like and where they should be placed. However, at the moment itself, Maertens and his team have about half an hour to fill the main track. “That is why it is important that everyone knows what he or she has to do.”

Willem Greve

“This was a nice course,” Willem Greve said afterwards. The Olympic show jumping rider is always happy with course designer Maertens. “It’s always nice when a course designer can accurately estimate the field of participants.”

Louis Konickx

For many years, Maertens watched the great Louis Konickx. The two course designers still work closely together. “Quintin designs very intelligent courses where he knows how to use the spaces well,” says the experienced Konickx. “As a result, he sees more possibilities than others.”
