Couple seriously injured after huge blow in Sint-Eloois-Vijve

At about 6 a.m. Sunday morning, the couple was driving from the direction of Kortrijk, just past the border with Desselgem, when the driver lost control of the wheel. The car swerved to the left and ended up in the canal. The car first collided head-on with a first masonry culvert, only to come to a stop after colliding with a second culvert. The blow must have been huge. Neighbors and other motorists rushed to the rescue.

It took the fire brigade more than an hour to free the two occupants, a 29-year-old couple from Wielsbeke, from the wreckage. The victims were taken to hospital in life-threatening condition. Meanwhile, their condition is said to be stable. The public prosecutor has appointed a traffic expert. The driver probably dozed off for a while.
