In a resolution at the Prime Minister’s Conference in Mainz, the state heads of government are calling for more free trade agreements.
“We want to push for trade agreements,” said Rhineland-Palatinate Prime Minister Alexander Schweitzer (SPD). An agreement with the four Latin American Mercosur states is one example, “we need more,” said Schweitzer. He mentioned Japan and Canada by name.
According to Schweitzer, the states are simultaneously appealing to the federal government and the EU Commission to advocate for lower tariffs in trade with the USA. What is currently in effect cannot be the last word, said Schweitzer. In addition to further free trade agreements, close relations with the United States are still needed.
