Council chamber decides on surrender of master con artist, known from documentary ‘The Puppet Master’, to France | Inland

The 51-year-old Briton who was arrested on September 2 in Groot-Bijgaarden, will appear before the Brussels council chamber today. He must judge his surrender to France. The Briton is said to have run over two police officers in France. The 50-year-old became known for the Netflix documentary ‘The Puppet Master: Hunting the ultimate conman’, which showed him raising 1 million pounds by telling people that he was a secret agent.

The man, Robert Hendy-Freegard, managed to impersonate an agent of the British secret service MI5 for years and in this way several victims totaling 1 million pounds (1.16 million euros, ed.) to troll. He used fake names like David Hendy and David Clifton.

In addition, he also told his female victims that their lives were in danger because they would be targets of the terrorist group IRA. The women had to stay with him always so that he could protect them. In this way, at one point he had five women who had to live in so-called hiding places, where they were completely dependent on him.

In 2002, the man was arrested by the FBI and British police, after which he was sentenced to life in prison in 2005 for fraud, theft and kidnapping of women. In 2009 that sentence was reduced to 9 years in prison on appeal.

After his release, Hendy-Freegard moved to France with a new partner, where he started breeding dogs. When French gendarmes came to check his nursery in the village of Vidallat on August 25, they only found his partner, but the Briton arrived a little later with his car. When the officers asked for his papers, he accelerated and ran over two officers. One of them suffered several fractures to the face.

A week later, on September 2, his car was spotted by the federal road police of East Flanders, after which the man was stopped in Groot-Bijgaarden and arrested.
