The number of copper thefts in Drenthe has increased in recent times. This is what Leon de Valk of the North Drenthe police says.

According to De Valk, thefts were reported in Veenhuizen, Roden, Gieten, Fluitenberg, Ruinen and Westerbork in the period from October 22 to November 11. The police also received a report of copper theft in Zevenhuizen, on the border area of the provinces of Drenthe and Groningen.

“In all cases it concerns the theft of copper drain pipes, gutters or lightning conductors at churches or adjacent buildings,” says De Valk. “We are investigating these reports and are of course also looking for a connection.”

Exact figures are not known. “Theft figures fluctuate and there are also many manifestations of copper theft,” De Valk explains. In addition, there is no separate code for copper thefts in the police systems. These are registered as reports of theft.

At this time, the police have not arrested any suspect(s).
