PSV continues to roar in the Eredivisie. The 21st victory of the season was achieved on Saturday evening. It gave a masterclass against PEC Zwolle and won 7-1. Luuk de Jong was the most celebrated man among the people of Eindhoven. He scored a hat-trick and is now the top scorer in the Eredivisie.
In recent weeks at PSV it has often been about missing opportunities. And that also seemed to be a problem in Zwolle. In the first half, the Eindhoven team was much better, but missed too many opportunities.
Luuk de Jong and Johan Bakayoko were the only two who managed to take advantage of an opportunity in the first half. Both players were accurate with their heads. Bakayoko opened the scoring from a cross from Sergino Dest. De Jong was accurate from a corner from Joey Veerman. It was a meager return from a lot of opportunities.
Slip Benitez
Just before half time it seemed to be getting exciting. Walter Benitez has been an excellent goalkeeper in recent weeks, but now allowed a ball to pass under him too easily, causing Eliano Reijnders to make the score 1-2.
Apart from the fact that PEC Zwolle became somewhat threatening for a few minutes with the crowd behind it, PSV’s lead was never in danger. Five minutes after halftime the margin was already two. Luuk de Jong made his second of the evening and made it 3-1. It was the striker’s 21st goal of the season.
Monster score
Any doubts about a victory for PSV were dispelled half an hour before the end when Bakayoko also scored his second of the evening. The celebration was not over yet as De Jong completed his hat trick by making it 5-1 on a pass from Hirving Lozano. Goal number 22 for the striker.
PSV’s hunger had not yet been satisfied. The Eindhoven team made it 6-1 via an own goal. Substitute Ricardo Pepi also got on the scoresheet by making it 7-1.
You won’t hear anything about missing opportunities in Eindhoven for a while. Scoring six goals when visiting PEC Zwolle is an excellent achievement. Next week, the undefeated leader will continue its journey towards the title with a home match against number two Feyenoord.
