Bayern Munich’s Sadio Mané will miss Senegal’s national team for the entire 2022 World Cup. At a press conference on Thursday, representatives of the Senegalese FA announced that the offensive player’s injury was worse than initially thought and that a visit to Qatar was definitely out of the question. In the late evening, Bayern confirmed that the 30-year-old had been successfully operated on in Innsbruck.

Previously, Abdoulaye Sow, Vice-President of the FSF, still assumed that Mané would only miss the first games and told the French newspaper “L’Equipe“: “Sadio is injured, you have to deal with it and not complain too much. […] We have to rely on the first few games without Sadio and win without Sadio.”

The 30-year-old striker tore a tendon in FC Bayern’s 6-1 win against Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga, but was still nominated for his home country’s World Cup squad. Africa’s Footballer of the Year is his country’s most important player. In Group A, Senegal meets the Netherlands on November 21, followed by hosts Qatar and Ecuador as opponents (all groups in the overview).
