At the site on the Runweg in Berlicum where the municipality of Sint-Michielsgestel wants to establish an asylum seekers center for more than three hundred people, fire was founded around half-twelve on Thursday evening. This happened for the gate of the site. A pile of car tires was on fire.
The fire brigade quickly had the fire under control. Nothing is known about the possible perpetrator or perpetrators. The police are investigating.
Eggs thrown to town hall
Earlier in the evening a protest action at the town hall in Sint-Michielsgestel got out of hand. A regular council meeting took place there. This meeting was not about the AZC, but campaigners seized this moment to express their dissatisfaction with the plans.
Hundreds of eggs and smoke torches were thrown to the town hall and heavy fireworks were set. The atmosphere was grim. A man who placed heavy fireworks in front of the door of the building was arrested.
‘Liar!’
The demonstrators criticize the communication of the municipality about the arrival of the asylum seekers’ center and they are concerned about the quality of life. The demonstrators want the asylum seekers to be spread over the municipality of Sint-Michielsgestel.
A day before there was also protest during an information meeting about the AZC. There alderman Theo Geldens was booed and called liar.
