Royalty expert Justine Marcella shares in the Story that the Dutch royal couple could have taken an example from their royal colleagues. “I would love it if they spend their vacation in Zeeland, Limburg or on Terschelling. Because the Netherlands is beautiful!”

Marcella does not expect Willem-Alexander and Máxima to spend the summer vacation in the Netherlands. “They opt for anonymity and safety. The fact that foreign royals do go on holiday in their own country may also be because they are less mundane than our royal couple.”
Not easy
Royaltywatcher Jeroen Snel can also understand that the Dutch royals do not stay on their own soil, because this is not easy because of the crowds. Yet he would applaud if the royal couple were going on holiday in the Netherlands. “I can already look forward to the images of King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima on the bike. Not that they have to stay here for weeks. A midweek or a long weekend would also be fun.”
Always available
According to Snel, a holiday for the royal family looks very different than for most Dutch people. “It is also not that they really have a vacation. Their agenda is only empty. On one day after August 15, King Willem-Alexander will be in the Netherlands for the National Indies in The Hague. And when something else happens in the Netherlands, he comes back. His phone is always within reach in Greece. He must always be available.
