Colorful boats and torn flags: these are the highs and lows of Alkmaar Pride

All the colors of the rainbow, 25 boats full of enthusiastic people and not a cloud in the sky. The boat parade during Alkmaar Pride was a great success yesterday. NH broadcast the parade live. It wasn’t just a party, though. View and read all the highs and lows of Pride Week here.

Alkmaar Pride – NH News

Due to the successful boat parade, the previous incidents have almost been forgotten this Pride Week. Still, the week showed that being yourself is not accepted by everyone. On Sunday, May 21, someone probably put his knife in three portraits of the outdoor exhibition ‘Intersex- 1 in 90’ on the Stationsplein.

“It doesn’t seem to be just vandalism, but a targeted action,” Mir Abe of the NNID, an organization that works for gender diversity, said at the time. “This is horrifying, especially because it’s aimed so directly at the faces.”

It didn’t stop there: a few days later it happened again. Last Friday, a 34-year-old Alkmaarder put the knife in another portrait from the same exhibition. He has now been arrested.

Destroyed rainbow flags

There were also two rainbow flags destroyed. Earlier, the flag of theater company Karavaan was already removed from the facade, and later they were actually destroyed. The group does not give up and has received twenty new flags.
