It has been 20 years since Coldplay published “X & Y”. After “Parachutes” and “A Rush of Blood to the Head” it was the first record in which the band tried to think even bigger than they were with their big audience. At that time it was about authentic heartache and hero worship (power plant, “talk”).
The first single release from “X & Y” was “Speed of Sound” at the time, which was still clearly reminiscent of the previous plates, even if it already sounded more like Formatradio. It was then the first hit the British in the United States made in the Billboard charts. Many more should follow. But especially for Chris Martin, the song was not in a good memory.
In 2011, the singer Howard Stern confessed to the radio show that the song Live would be dear to spare, “because the audience notices very quickly if you are not convinced of something”. Every now and then there was “Speed of Sound” to hear on stage, but has often been shortened since 2016 and never in full band formation.

Now Coldplay has apparently thought about it again. At their appearance at the Sun Bowl Stadium in El Paso (Texas) they played the song together in an acoustic version. In addition to the permanent favorite “Fix You”, it was the only “X & Y” track that evening, but at least.
Before Coldplay started, Martin trusted the audience: “Why shouldn’t we try to win the song ‘Speed of Sound’ back? At some point we will revise it and just do a remix. I would like to make it a little faster, a little shorter and a little tighter …”
The singer added with a laugh: “For those of you who were not born in 2005, he is not particularly good, but we will still try to make the best of it.”
Coldplay has been traveling through the United States since May 31. The gig in El Paso was the second at a time at the Sun Bowl Stadium.
