Coevorden starts construction schools in Schoonoord. Expansion to mfc will be discussed later. New construction of sports hall still uncertain

To speed up the construction of two primary schools in Schoonoord, Coevorden has cut the proposal for an MFC into pieces. First the schools are next, then the rest as village hall and sports hall.

The new multifunctional center in Schoonoord has been discussed for years. The need is particularly high at the two primary schools CBS De Slagkrooi and obs SJ van Royenschool. Both buildings are ready for demolition. The mayor and aldermen are now coming up with a proposal to invest 5.3 million euros in new construction of the schools.

At the end of last year, different variants were on the table: a complex with all the trimmings, with the village hall and a completely new sports hall in addition to the schools. Or maybe the stripped-down variant: without all users of the village hall and renovation of the current sports hall, instead of new construction. There was quite a lot at stake, because the difference was 10 million euros.

With grief

Without a village hall has never been an option for those involved. In order to be able to start building the schools as soon as possible, the Executive Board is not worrying about the rest for the time being. Alderman Joop Slomp (PvdA): “Both schools are eagerly awaiting new housing. The buildings have been on the list for replacement for some time, because they are technically and functionally outdated. On the south side of the Sportparklaan we can quickly start with the new construction for the schools. And there is enough space for a phased expansion into an mfc with a new or renovated sports hall.”

Housing construction

The places where the village hall and schools are now located are in the picture for housing. This is also a reason for the Executive Board to speed up the construction of the schools and the MFC.

A proposal will be submitted at the end of this year for the expansion to mfc. In addition, further research is being done into the choice of new construction or renovation of the sports hall. Coevorden says he will do this in close cooperation with the working group. In addition to the schools, this includes the following users: football club KSC, korfball club SDO, tennis club De Return, shooting club TOP, Dorpsbelangen, Social Welfare Coevorden and the Business Association Schoonoord.
