Rumors are circulating about the potential for the Nintendo Switch 2 to feature a new LCD panel from Sharp, following the discovery of an LCD panel on a Chinese reseller’s website. This panel, distinct from the Innolux panel used in the launch model, could signal a notable upgrade for Nintendo’s portable gaming console.

According to Digital Foundry’s analysis, the LCD panel of the Switch 2 exhibits more motion blur compared to the display of the original Switch model. The Sharp panel, measuring 7.9 inches, boasts a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels, with support for variable refresh rates of up to 120 Hz and HDR10.

New Sharp Panel Sparks Discussion

The newly emerged Sharp LCD panel aligns with the specifications of the Innolux panel currently utilized, primarily differing in terms of detailed components. While both panels share the same size and resolution, the Sharp panel, labeled LS079T1SX10P, showcases differences in the circuit board layout, connectors, and cabling.

As reported by Nintendo Patents Watch on X, these variations could suggest that Nintendo is moving towards a new panel revision rather than just a minor upgrade. Notably, the Innolux panel already used LTPS display glass supplied by Sharp, indicating a deeper connection between the companies. However, it’s essential to recognize that these details remain unconfirmed by Nintendo at this time.

The Situation Remains Uncertain

Whether Nintendo intends to replace the Innolux LCD panel with the Sharp version or to implement both panels across different versions of the Switch 2 remains unclear. There are also questions about whether the adjustments made in the Sharp LCD panel can significantly reduce motion blur and ghosting, or if it will closely resemble the performance of the Innolux panel.

Although Nintendo has acknowledged an updated version of the Switch 2 that complies with the European Right to Repair legislation, there have been no official announcements regarding a revision of the display for the hybrid console. As such, the situation surrounding the Sharp LCD panel’s appearance on the Chinese reseller website will be crucial to monitor as more information becomes available.
