Prorail has decided to halt train traffic in the Northern Netherlands until at least 11 a.m. The trains could run despite the ice, but the big challenge is to get the train staff to the trains, says Martijn de Graaf of Prorail. “That is already a major problem. And if there is an emergency on the track, our incident responders, and also the emergency services, must be able to arrive on site. And that is not possible due to the slippery conditions.”
According to De Graaf, the safety of travelers is also at stake. “It is treacherously slippery on the platforms, we cannot get there to spread.”
“For now we have to wait and see what will happen. We are closely monitoring the news surrounding code red. It is now set until 10 a.m., if this is extended we will adjust accordingly. In addition, it will take some effort to get all our staff to the right places,” De Graaf concludes.
