Rio world champion Sami Khedira is set to join his former club Real Madrid again – this time as a coach.

As the reputable portal “The Athletic” reports, Khedira will work for the new old head coach José Mourinho at the Royals. It would be the first coaching job for the 39-year-old, who ended his active career in 2021.

Khedira played at Real between 2010 and 2015, including under Mourinho. He played 161 competitive games (nine goals, 13 assists).

His professional resume also includes stints at his hometown club VfB Stuttgart, at Juventus Turin and at Hertha BSC.

Most recently, Khedira worked as a TV expert.

Real confirmed Mourinho’s return last week. As the Royals announced, the Portuguese will receive a three-year contract. He will conduct his first training session on July 13th at the start of pre-season training, it said.

This news came as no surprise to anyone. There has been speculation about the return for a long time. It was Mourinho’s previous employer Benfica who had already revealed the Portuguese’s move to Real via the X platform.

According to the Portuguese, the Royals will pay 15 million euros for Mourinho to his previous employer.

Real Madrid: This is what Mourinho apparently expects from Khedira

Mourinho already knows Real from his first term in office between 2010 and 2013. He won the Spanish Cup in 2011 and the championship in 2012 – together with Khedira.

Real President Florentino Pérez is considered a big supporter of Mourinho, whose contract at Benfica would have run for another year. However, the coach had an exit clause. “The Special One” missed out on the championship with Benfica this season.

According to “The Athletic”, according to Mourinho’s idea, Khedira should primarily take on the role of a link between the team, club and coaching staff.
