Alois Schwartz has left the coaching position at 1. FC Saarbrücken after seven months. “Unfortunately, things didn’t go the way we all wanted,” the coach explained in an FCS statement. It says they separated by mutual consent. Assistant coach Dimitrios Moutas, whom Schwartz brought in in the summer, is also leaving.
Schwartz was in office for the Saarland team for even less time than at his previous position at Hansa Rostock, where he had to pack his bags within nine months after 27 games. A total of 24 competitive games took place in Saarbrücken. After 15 third division matchdays, the ambitious FCS is only in twelfth place, currently only three points ahead of the relegation zone. The fourth of the last five games was lost in the 2-0 loss in Munich on Sunday. The Saarbrücken team hasn’t won in eight games (the FCS season at a glance).
A permanent replacement for Schwartz is apparently not expected to arrive this year. Sports director Jürgen Luginger will take over the coaching job on an interim basis until the winter break, according to the club statement. Luginger said: “It is natural for me to take responsibility in this phase. Together with the team, we will do everything we can to create stability and go successfully into the last games before the winter break.”
Saarbrücken was Schwartz’s ninth head coaching position in his career; at no previous employer did the Nürtingen native stay in charge for such a short time as he did at FCS.
