Peter Lawwell no longer wants to work for Celtic Glasgow in the new year. Threats against his family prompted him to make this decision.
Peter Lawwell has announced his resignation as chairman of Celtic Glasgow at the end of the year. The reason for the decision: massive hostility.
Lawwell said on the Scottish club’s homepage that he was announcing his resignation “with great sadness”, but that the insults and threats from certain circles had increased and had now become “unbearable”. The threats frightened and worried his family. “At this point in my life, I don’t need this,” explained the 66-year-old. “I cannot accept this and am therefore leaving the club that I have loved all my life.
Lawwell returned to the club in 2023 after previously serving as Celtic’s managing director for almost two decades until 2021. His resignation comes during a difficult sporting phase for the club.
Celtic missed out on qualifying for the Champions League in August against outsiders Qairat Almaty. Coach Brenden Rodgers resigned from his position in October 2025. Martin O’Neil subsequently took over as an interim solution. Wilfried Nancy is now in office.
However, the Frenchman endured a horror start at Celtic. There were four defeats in the first four games, including defeat in the League Cup final against St. Mirren. Celtic, who have won 13 of Scotland’s last 14 league titles, are also lagging behind in the league. Leaders Hearts of Midlothian have already moved to six points at the top. However, Celtic still have a game in hand.
