Climate activists dye the rivers of Rome and Milan and the grand canal of Venice green

Climate activists have today colored fluorescent green the water from the canals and rivers of the main Italian cities such as Venice, Rome and Milan to draw attention to the lack of proposals regarding climate change by the Italian Government and the COP 28 summit, which is being held in Dubai, reports Efe.

The ‘Extinction Rebellion’ association has organized these protests “to denounce a new political failure of COP28 and world governments in the fight against the climate crisis and the sixth mass extinction.”

The activists threw a substance called ‘fluorescein’ into the waters of Venice’s grand canal, which is harmless and quickly colored the water for a few hours. At the same time, several of them descended with ropes and harnesses from the Rialto Bridge, displaying a banner that read: “Cop28: while the Government speaks, we hang by a thread.” The soundtrack of the film ‘Titanic’ has also been heard with the aim of highlighting the “catastrophic future” that awaited Venice: a sinking.

The same scene was repeated in the Naviglio Grande canal in Milan, one of the leisure areas of the capital of Lombardy, when the young people also colored the waters green and displayed a banner on one of the bridges that read: ‘The Government speaks and the earth sinks’.

The same substance has been used to dye the water of the Tiber River green in the Tiber Island area and there have also been similar protests in Bologna and Turin. In all cities, protesters were accompanied to the police station for identification.
