. Keine effort for Alexander Zverev in Halle: The German fed his favorite role and made it clear to the American Marcos Giron.
After a worrying incident, Alexander Zverev won his opening duel at the tournament in Halle/Westphalia. The finalist from 2016 and 2017 sat 6-2, 6-1 against the American Marcos Giron and successfully started his Wimbledon general rehearsal.
In the first sentence there was a game interruption. Part of an advertising table fell into the scene on a spectator. Zverev immediately gave an ice pack to the stands for care, the man apparently affected was able to leave the stadium with medical support and with applause from the audience.
Zverev satisfied
“I hope the lady is doing well. Of course, something like that shouldn’t happen,” said Zverev. “Of course I am satisfied with how I played. But the most important thing is that everyone goes home healthy and happy here.” The German number one could not be brought out of the rhythm of the short interruption. After 54 minutes, Zverev got the first set and then pushed even more to the pace. He quickly took the service to Giron and converted his first match ball after 1:19 hours.
Now against Sonego
Zverev was the last remaining German professional to start the tournament. Daniel Altmaier (Kempen), Yannick Hanfmann (Karlsruhe) and Jan-Lennard Struff (Warstein) had already left before the 28-year-old. Born in Hamburg, Zverev now meets the Italian Lorenzo Sonego in his round of 16.
In his opening duel, Zverev again showed that he actually has good conditions for the covering with his strong surcharge and the massive baseline blows. However, he could further increase his game variants in order to become more difficult to calculate and to catch up a little to his currently hurried competitors.

“The two are already a level over everyone else at the moment,” Zverev said before the tournament start to the dominators Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner: “I just have to see that I can get them a bit.” Zverev could still meet Sinner in Halle – if both were to reach the final.
The last German tournament victory in East Westphalia has been a few years ago. In 2016 Florian Mayer beat Zverev’s final. Michael Stich (1994), Nicolas Kiefer (1999), David Prinosil (2000), Tommy Haas (2009, 2012) and Philipp Kohlschreiber (2011) also contain the winner’s list of the tournament. Roger Federer (Switzerland) with ten titles is the record winner.
