Christopher North, founding keyboardist of the prog and soft rock band Ambrosia, has died. He was 75 years old.

Ambrosia confirmed North’s death in a statement posted on Facebook. An exact cause of death was not given, but North had struggled with a number of illnesses and injuries in recent years. The band paid tribute to his “courageous and successful battle with throat cancer,” which he was diagnosed with in 2024 and overcame last year. But in October 2025, North was hit by a speeding car and subsequently developed pneumonia.

Hailed as the “Hammond B3 King” in Ambrosia’s statement, the band credited him with having created a “sonic architecture” that “shaped a generation of progressive and soft rock.” North’s organ was an indispensable part of Ambrosia’s sound – sometimes as an atmospheric foundation, sometimes as an elegant solo instrument on hits like “Biggest Part of Me” and “You’re the Only Woman (You & I)”.

“Keyboard wizard” and founding member

“A founding member since 1970, he was a keyboard wizard who brought unparalleled intensity and emotional depth to every performance,” Ambrosia wrote, adding, “Christopher North’s work didn’t just fill the airwaves; it created ‘acoustic landscapes’ that balanced virtuosity with catchy, radio-friendly hooks. We celebrate a true craftsman of the classic rock era, whose lush piano lines and soaring Organ swings will remain timeless. He was truly unique and was very loved by his fans and bandmates.”

David Pack, Ambrosia’s former lead singer and songwriter, honored North’s musical virtuosity and “his wild and intoxicating stage personality” saying: “Most nights he played his hands bloody on the B3 or broke keys. Fiery is an understatement.” Pack added, “Thank you, Chris, for contributing so much to the original Ambrosia.”

North was born and raised in San Francisco and began his career in the ’60s, performing around the city with various bands. He formed Ambrosia after Pack, bassist and vocalist Joe Puerta and drummer Burleigh Drummond discovered him at a gig – which Pack remembered vividly in his obituary.

The emergence of ambrosia

“We found him at a show in the South Bay in 1970, where he was brought on stage in a ‘coffin’ by sound engineer Tom Trefethen (with stereo speakers in it) and got on the organ with a fifth of Jack Daniels in his hand, sunglasses, total attitude and then took apart the Hammond B3 – and said, ‘That’s our man!'”

Ambrosia had moderate success with their seventies releases, which leaned more towards prog rock. But as Pack revealed in a 2001 interview, North struggled with mental and physical problems and asked to leave the band in 1977 while they were working on their third album, Life Beyond LA – on which he only appears on two tracks. But just a year later, North was back and helped Ambrosia record their biggest album: “One Eighty” from 1980.

“One Eighty” only peaked at No. 25 on the Billboard 200 album charts—six positions below the peak of “Life Beyond LA”—but was Ambrosia’s first album to be certified gold. Its success came from the hit singles “Biggest Part of Me” and “You’re the Only Woman,” which peaked at No. 3 and No. 13 on the Hot 100, respectively.

The end and the reunion

Ambrosia released one more album – 1982’s Road Island – before the band broke up a few years later. North and his bandmates eventually reunited and toured regularly over the following decades, but without recording another album.

In addition to his work with Ambrosia, North appeared on albums by Chuck Girard and Tin Drum, the band Drummond founded with his wife Mary Harris. In 2014, he covered the Doors’ “The Soft Parade” for the tribute album Light My Fire: A Classic Rock Salute to the Doors.
