Christian Bale names one condition to returning as Batman

Christian Bale told Screenrant he would star in another Batman movie, but only on one condition: Christopher Nolan must direct it. Bale played the superhero in Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy from 2005 to 2012.

Open for further cooperation

“I think it would be special if Chris Nolan ever said to himself, ‘You know, I have one more story to tell.’ And if he wants to tell this story with me, I would be there.”

However, the actor also clarified that there are no ongoing talks about a new project. “No one ever mentioned it to me. Nobody brought it up,” Bale said. “People occasionally say to me, ‘Oh, I heard you were approached and offered all this.’ And then I say, ‘This is new to me. No one has ever done that.’”

Two hurdles

The Oscar winner also mentioned that he and Nolan discussed the progression of the Batman movies before filming began. From the outset they had agreed on only three parts. “We said, ‘Hey, look. Let’s do three films if we’re lucky enough to make it. And then let’s go. Let’s not linger too long.’”

There is also another obstacle. DC and Warner Bros. produced Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, and The Dark Knight Rises. However, Nolan separated from Warner Bros. at the end of 2020 after they decided to publish the future cinema program on their streaming service HBO Max. During his departure, Nolan expressed his disappointment at the decision:

“Some of the biggest filmmakers and biggest movie stars in our industry went to bed the night before thinking they were working for the biggest film studio and woke up to find they were working for the worst streaming service.”

Bale is currently starring in the fourth installment of the Thor franchise, Thor: Love and Thunder. He takes on the role of the villain Gorr the godslayer.
