For the 34th time in a row, Chris Lornoy (63) celebrated New Year’s Eve in the Ten Kerselaere retirement home in Heist-op-den-Berg, where he ended up at the age of 29 after an accident with permanent brain damage. No one has ever stayed there longer, and possibly no one has lived in a retirement home for that long in the whole of Flanders. “There was no room for him anywhere else at that time,” say his brother and sister, who have visited their beloved big brother several times a week all these years. “And not out of compassion, but out of unconditional love. It is an urge to be with him.”
