China has a very strict corona policy. Authorities hope to quell outbreaks with local lockdowns and massive testing campaigns, among other things. The city of Yuzhou with 1.2 million inhabitants has been locked since Tuesday. The city of Xi’an has been in lockdown since December. There, part of the 13 million inhabitants currently struggle with food shortages, they are no longer allowed to leave their homes to buy food.
China sees much fewer confirmed corona cases than many other countries, but the daily infection figures in the country are currently at the highest point since March 2020. China reported a total of 91 new confirmed infections on Wednesday.
The country has an extra interest in combating the corona virus. The Winter Olympics start in February in the capital Beijing.
