‘Check your own land’, glass particles found around burned down stables

People who live within a radius of about 3 kilometers west of the barn fire in Sint-Oedenrode must check their own land for shards of glass. If owners of animals find it safe enough, they can go outside again. This is what the Brabant-Noord Safety Region says after calling on people to keep their animals indoors.

The municipality of Meierijstad has shared a map of the area exactly. Because there was an easterly wind during the fire on Spierkesweg, people should check their plots, especially to the west and southwest. Small pieces of glass were found in the vicinity of the fire. They probably come from solar panels that were lost in the fire.

It first concerned a radius of 3.5 kilometers around the burned down stable in which residents had to check. “Further investigation has only shown that the area is a lot smaller, but as a precaution we initially estimated it broadly,” said a spokeswoman for the municipality.

According to the municipality of Meierijstad, which includes Sint-Oedenrode, people can clean up the fallen particles with gloves on. “They can be placed in a tied garbage bag with the residual waste,” the site says. “We will also send a letter with information to all addresses in the affected area.”

Schoolyard
The municipality of Meierijstad ensures that the public space is cleaned to remove any glass particles. The grounds of the Sterjasmijn primary school in Nijnsel have already been cleaned on Wednesday afternoon using leaf blowers so that the children can play there safely on Thursday.

The fire itself was under control at three o’clock in the afternoon, but the fire brigade still had to extinguish the fire for hours. In total, two stables containing 9000 piglets and adult pigs have been lost. It is not yet known how the fire started.
