Munich (dpa -Afx) – Openai, the group behind Chatgpt, opened its first German office in Munich. First it starts with around a dozen employees; However, the number should still increase, as the company reports. It is the twelfth location worldwide. Germany is one of the top five countries in terms of use of Chatgpt, said Openai chief economist Ronnie CHatterji. Ultimately, one came here because there was a very high demand.
For the decision in favor of Munich as a German location, it was primarily decisive that there were so many companies from industry to the start-up, said Nicholas Turley, Product Head of Chatgpt.
Good cooperation with the Technical University and other large academic institutions also play a role. “But hopefully it won’t be our only German office.” In addition, the office should not focus on Bavaria, but should act nationwide, as Openai emphasizes.
Söder: Make as wide as possible
The Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU) said at the ceremony for the office opening on Thursday evening with a view to the size of the location: “We want you to make yourself as wide as possible.” Bavaria will do anything to keep Openai. He himself works a lot with a chat, said Söder. “Because every stupid clutter I want to know knows.”
“To have brought Openaai to Munich is a real coup for the digital location of Bavaria,” said Bavarian Digital Minister Fabian Mehring (Free Voters). This also applies in combination with other industry sizes such as Apple, Microsoft or Google (Alphabet C (Ex Google)), which already have large locations in Munich.
“As today Openaai, these global champions on the Isar once started small, and we saw how dynamically they grew and what importance they are now for Bavaria’s economy,” he said. “At Openaai I expect a very similar development in the heart of Munich.”
Do not ignore the wake -up call
The tech and digital economy has the potential to “become the new leading industry in our country,” said Mehring. “AI and Co. cause the great industrial revolution of our time and will redistribute the prosperity of the world. We cannot ignore this wake -up call to the digital turning point, otherwise we will experience loss of wealth that we have no idea.”
To emulate large voice models, as they already exist in the United States and Asia, is not the way to digital sovereignty, the minister emphasized. “Instead, we rely on developing the specific AI treatments for economy and society in this country-and it is essential to have almost all major tech companies in the world with us in Munich.”//RUC/DP/He
