The Charité fired the director of the cardiology clinic on the Virchow campus, Prof. Burkert Pieske (61). The accusation: He is said to have used doctors in operations for which they were not qualified.

Also, he would have employed a company owned by his wife and himself. The RBB had first reported on the case.

Pieske is a recognized heart specialist. The BZ has also reported on him as an expert several times in the past. He is director of the medical clinic with a focus on cardiology on the Virchow campus and at the same time at the German Heart Center.

In addition to the allegation that doctors are said to have carried out cardiac catheter examinations even though they had no professional qualifications, the allegation of compliance is particularly serious. According to BZ information, Pieske’s wife, who is also employed as a doctor for internal medicine in his clinic, runs a medical company based in Dahlem as managing director, which worked extensively for Pieske’s cardiology department.

Purpose of the company: Analysis, data management and data processing of imaging data in the field of clinical studies. In addition to his wife, Prof. Pieske himself and another scientific employee of the clinic are shareholders of the company.

“It is true that the Charité has ended the contractual relationship with the director of the medical clinic with a focus on cardiology,” confirms Charité spokeswoman Manuela Zingl when asked by the BZ. The Charité cannot comment on the details. Prof. Pieske could not be reached for comment.
