Chappell Roan initially posted a tribute to Brigitte Bardot, but deleted it after criticism. The queer singer was unaware of Bardot’s homophobic and transphobic statements.
Brigitte Bardot died on December 28, 2025 at the age of 91. The film world mourned, but the star from the 1950s was not without controversy. Chappell Roan also initially bowed with a tribute, but then backtracked.
Tribute deleted on Instagram
First, the pop singer posted an Instagram story in which she had nothing but praise for the French icon and praised her as an inspiration: “She was my inspiration for ‘Red Wine Supernova’. Rest in peace, Ms. Bardot.” So she seemed to be a fan of the deceased.
A few minutes later, however, she corrected herself and revised her first story with another: “Damn, I didn’t know about all the crazy stuff Ms. Bardot was about. Of course I don’t condone it. Very disappointing to learn about it.”
It seems that the singer was only aware of the Frenchwoman’s immense success in the film world and her commitment to animals, but not of the controversies that she has accumulated over the years.
Questionable statements from Brigitte Bardot
Chappell Roan is a well-known queer pop star and a major representative of the LGBTQ+ scene. Brigitte Bardot, on the other hand, has repeatedly attracted attention over the years with homophobic and transphobic statements as well as right-wing statements about immigrants.
In the last interview before her death, she defended actors Nicolas Bedos and Gérard Depardieu, both of whom had been convicted of sexual assault. She also said: “Feminism is not my thing. I like men.”
In March 2019, she was also sentenced to a fine for racist statements towards residents of the island of La Réunion in the Indian Ocean. In a letter she described the people living there as a “degenerate population without tradition” and wrote about them as “natives who have preserved the genes of savages.”
