Lewandowski received with applause in Munich

The duel between the two group favorites Bayern and Barcelona started with the expected fast and high-quality offensive football. Thanks to the fast switching game of both teams, a large part of the first quarter of an hour was played in the two penalty areas – with FC Barcelona having the advantage.

First, midfielder Pedri challenged Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, then – how could it be otherwise – ex-Bayern Robert Lewandowski, who had been applauded by the fans in the Munich Arena, approached and missed the Catalans’ first big chance. Former Dortmund winger Ousmane Dembélé served the Pole with a half-high cross that Lewandowski maneuvered over the goal from 14 meters despite a clear shot.

Barcelona with a strong first half

After the strong urge from Xavi’s team, Bayern midfielder Marcel Sabitzer created Bayern Munich’s first good chance in the 32nd minute. Sadio Mané served Sabitzer from the inside right in the penalty area, who just missed the top left corner of the goal by centimetres. Shortly thereafter, Thomas Müller and Mané prevented each other from finishing in the penalty area.

Overall, FC Barcelona presented themselves in top form in the first half and put Bayern under pressure most of the time. The Munich team stabilized towards the end of the first 45 minutes, but were also lucky that defender Alphonso Davies failed to punish Dembélé in the Bayern penalty area.

Double from Hernandez and Sané

Bayern coach Julian Nagelsmann brought on Leon Goretzka in the second half, who tried a powerful shot from the second row shortly after the restart, but was denied by Barcelona keeper Marc-André ter Stegen. Joshua Kimmich’s corner kick that followed found Lucas Hernandez completely free, who headed the ball in to put Bayern ahead.

Just three minutes later, Jamal Musiala sent his Bayern colleague Leroy Sané into the opposition’s penalty area, Sané dribbled out the oncoming opponents and pushed the ball over ter Stegen into the goal to take a 2-0 lead. Bayern made a brave and successful start in the second half.

Bayern efficiency secures victory

The offensive spectacle of the two teams continued even after the two goals: Musiala just missed the third goal, Pedri missed the chance to score, although he appeared alone in front of Neuer. Lewandowski tried again. There was no sign of FC Barcelona catching up, but Bayern put up a good fight and took the 2-0 lead over time. As a result, efficient Munich team secured the second three of this Champions League season and thus the lead in Group C. Bitter: Goalscorer Hernandez had to leave the field in the final seconds of the game with a suspected adductor injury.

On the third matchday of the Champions League, Bayern will welcome the supposed underdog of Group C: Viktoria Pilsen will be in Munich on October 4 at 6:45 p.m. (in the audio stream and live ticker on sportschau.de). Barcelona travel to Milan for a duel against Inter (9 p.m.).
