Coming off a weekend with just 11 goals in ten league games, we were rewarded with a scoring spree. The previous record in a single night dates back to November 26th: 40
It may be the new “democratic” formula that results in unbalanced matches, but in the Champions League we score in bunches just as in Italy we have just recorded the negative record of scores in a championship round: 11 goals in ten matches, for an average that is all too easy to calculate. In the first evening of the third round of the maxi group, 4 were scored, a new record for the new format, introduced last season.
without that 0-0…

While in Serie A we suffered four 0-0s out of ten matches over the weekend just ended, in 9 Champions League matches on Tuesday only Kairat-Pafos ended goalless (two teams that with the old formula would have seen the final phase of the Cup through binoculars), while in the other 8 matches the mark was exceeded 5 goals per match. For a City that was limited to two goals at Villarreal, they overran PSG at Bayer Leverkusen (7-2, with six different scorers), Barcelona against Olympiacos (6-1) and unfortunately PSV against Napoli. Here too, not a good look for our football if the Italian champions lose a set against an average team. On the other hand, the contribution to the goal total was given by Inter with the poker dropped in Brussels. Same score as Arsenal against Atletico Madrid. Newcastle were limited to 3 goals against Benfica. Six goals also in Copenhagen-Dortmund 2-4.
previous record

The previous (inevitably young) record for a Champions League evening was set on 26 November (5th round) with 40 goals. The next day another 27 arrived for what remains the record for a Cup round: 67. On Wednesday before midnight we will know if history will be rewritten again.
